Candidacy Announcement

I am a candidate for the office of Attorney General for the state of Montana.

I have been representing the public and individual citizens in the state and federal courts of Montana for nearly 30 years. I have prosecuted criminals and represented my friends and neighbors who were injured or mistreated. I have managed my own law firm for 26 years. I have worked with the Attorney Generals office on legislative matters while I was in the Montana Senate, so I understand the needs of the Department of Justice and the importance of a qualified Attorney General.

The Attorney General is Montana's chief legal and law enforcement officer and the director of the Department of Justice. In addition to the criminal prosecution and civil legal services that the Department provides, it also has administrative authority over the Motor Vehicle, Highway Patrol, and the gaming control divisions. The demands and responsibilities of the Department require an Attorney General who has legal and life experience to get the job done right. I have that experience.

I graduated from the University of Montana School of Law in 1978. I worked as a Deputy County Attorney in Butte-Silver Bow until 1981, then moved to Bozeman and entered the private practice of law. My private practice is a civil trial practice focused on helping injured people. I have the criminal and civil experience necessary to be Attorney General.

My wife, Debby and I have been married for 33 years. We have three sons: Craig, a senior at MSU; Christopher, a freshman at MSU; and Matthew, a freshman at Bozeman High School. I also have a daughter and two grandchildren, John and James. I understand how important it is to keep our schools, neighborhoods and communities safe from child predators, drug dealers and drunk drivers.

I am also a combat veteran. I served with the U.S. Marine Corps Division 1 during the Vietnam War in 1968-69. I was trained as a machine gunner, served as a squad leader and was awarded a purple heart. As a combat marine, I learned the value of discipline and teamwork. I have applied those skills through out my professional career and will apply them as your Attorney General.

As Attorney General I will use my skills and experience to:

  • Make sure law enforcement and prosecutors get the training and resources they need to keep our streets and communities safe from criminals.
  • Protect our kids from drug dealers and Internet predators.
  • Defend our senior citizens from abuse and exploitation.
  • Protect consumers from deceitful scams and schemes.
  • Guard our environment against illegal pollution and degradation.

My experience serving two sessions in the Montana Senate (2003 and 2005), especially on the Senate Judiciary Committee, will help me work with the Legislature to promote legislation that will keep our communities and citizens young and old, safe and secure.

I am the most qualified and experienced candidate for Attorney General.
